But with the development of small coffee producers over the past 60 or so years, the area has experienced notable economic growth.

While the weather is often rainy and overcast, the soil in this former volcanic range offers a well-balanced composition of minerals. In this region, coffee has been cultivated, almost exclusively, by small producers since the 1950s. Today, virtually every farm on the mountain has become a coffee-producing unit and what was once one of the poorest and most isolated areas of Guatemala is vibrant and growing. Rainy and cloudy, Oriente is located on a former volcanic range. Its soil is made of metamorphic rock: balanced in minerals and quite different from soils in regions which have seen volcanic activity since coffee was first planted.

The altitude where coffee is grown ranges from 4,300-5,500 feet, and the temperature ranges from 18-25 C (64-77°F).  This area has relatively little rainfall compared to Cobán or San Marcos being only 1,800-2,000 mm per year.

Bourbon, Catuai, Caturra, and Pache coffee beans are all grown in the Nuevo Oriente region and coffees are harvested from December to March.
Coffees from Nuevo Oriente are aromatic, chocolate-like overtones, a marked acidity, a good balance with a good body.
